Voice and Data Standards
As the Nation witnessed on September 11, 2001, some jurisdictions cannot reliably communicate with other departments and jurisdictions. This limitation in the public safety system’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies, large and small, significantly increases the risk of harm or death to both the responders arriving on scene and the victims relying on them for help. One of the key barriers is the lack of standards for interoperable communications and equipment.
The Commonwealth of Virginia’s public safety personnel envision a future in which first responders have the capability to respond to an incident anywhere in the country, using their own equipment, on any network, and on a dedicated public safety spectrum. In addition, they will be able to communicate with each other as authorized via voice, data, and video on demand and in real time.
This page provides resources and information expressing Virginia’s commitment to aid in the standards development process.
